Amazon has made a surprise entrance in the fashion industry by introducing its own apparel line. For the past few months, the company was head-hunting for experienced people in the fashion industry, which did trigger some suspicion. The company also sponsored Men’s Fashion Week in New York for the first time.
It has also introduced 1,800 fashion products for men, women, and children on its website under seven brand names with the company trademark. The fashion brands that the e-commerce giant owns include Society New York, Franklin Tailored, Franklin & Freeman, James & Erin, Scout + Ro, Lark & Ro, and North Eleven.
It is the company’s first venture on its own in the apparel line, while it had been trying since a decade to make its mark in the fashion industry without success, courtesy of tough competition. Endless.com was its fashion website that offered jewelry, handbags and fashion accessories, but was closed back in 2012.
The digital retail giant is busy hiring experienced designers and plans to bring Frances Russel, Head of Marks & Spencer women’s wear on board, as reported by The Guardian.
At the moment consumers can buy clothes and accessories at low prices from Amazon, which is assumed to be for a limited time period. In addition, experts are of the view that the online retail giant’s move to offer both basic and high-end fashion products to its users will pose a serious threat to many key market players in the fashion industry.
